Responsibilities
The Wonder Interpretation Coordinator uses the concept of Wonder (defined as a feeling of surprise mingled with admiration, caused by something beautiful, unexpected, unfamiliar, or inexplicable) as a lens for interpretation of real objects and ideas for the museum’s visitors based on around The Ringling’s collections - sparking curiosity, invoking awe, and bridging varying perspectives.
- Uses wonder as a lens for interpretation and Ringling Legacy stories to better understand and support visitor experiences with museum collections. Creates opportunities for awe and discussion throughout museum collections.
- Works collaboratively with curatorial and education departments to create an institutional interpretation plan to support visitor experiences within the Museum of Art, Circus Museum, Bayfront Gardens, Ca’ d’Zan, Historic Asolo Theater, and special exhibitions. Uses accessibility and universal design in learning principles to create interpretation pathways for all visitors, equally valuing the visitor, the collections, and The Ringling’s mission.
- Incorporates concept of wonder into the interpretation of Ringling collection areas including setting priorities and principles. Creates interpretation plan for Ringling Legacy stories including profiles of John and Mable Ringling, A. Everett Austin, and others in the museum’s history in advance of The Ringling’s centennial in 2027.
- Creates interpretation plan for The Ringling’s Circus Museum, gardens, and grounds, to centralize this as an intentional and experiential part of the visitor experience. Collaboration with Circus, Facilities, and Education Departments.
- Coordinates the design and implementation of programming around concept of wonder. Collaborates with the Education Department to support programs, educational interpretation and visitor didactics, and tours. Assists in organizing and hosting annual symposia/gatherings focused on building a community across multiple disciplines.
- Raises The Ringling’s local, regional, national, and international profile as an expert in wonder-informed museum interpretation through networking, presentations, and publications. Performs other duties and projects, as assigned, that support museum operations and provides general assistance for the Education department.
This role is a three-year visiting grant-funded position. Please note that The Ringling is seeking ongoing funding to potentially support this role in the long term.
Requirements
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Museum Studies, Museum Education, Art History, Studio Art, or Art Education, and two years of relevant experience.
- Valid Florida Driver's License or the ability to obtain prior to hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Museum Studies, Museum Education, Art History, Studio Art, or Art Education.
- Knowledge of:
- Adult learning theory.
- Child development theories and methodology.
Art/art education field.
- Ability to:
- Demonstrate critical thinking based upon in-depth data, substantiating information, considering and respecting others' input, personal values, and ethics.
