Compensation: The total compensation range for this position is $105,000-$125,000, depending on experience. Salaries at CFA represent inclusion of a $10,000 healthcare stipend.

Who we are: The Committee for the First Amendment organizes the entertainment industry to fight assaults on the First Amendment, and to be a pillar of democracy. We believe that an organized, unified, and activated entertainment industry will prevent its capture and capitulation to rising authoritarianism. From the rank-and-file members who keep the entertainment industry running, to rising stars and global names, Committee members are entertainment professionals committed to defending the First Amendment for all.
What we do: We work to inspire and mobilize the public to defend the First Amendment and advance democracy through: organizing within the entertainment industry; running strategic campaigns at key pressure points; and leveraging the talent of our membership to shift dominant narratives and move people to action. We are built as a campaign, not a long-term institution. This will be a year-long contract with the possibility for extension.
The Position:
This is an incredible opportunity to build power and community with some of the most joyful, creative, and hard-working people in the world. We are hiring an experienced, strategic organizer who will join our small, nimble, dedicated team to help us achieve these goals. This position will start as a National Organizer position and may potentially shift to share between two positions with one in LA and one in NY, where the bulk of our membership resides. This position will report to the Executive Director. The successful candidate will support and shape the work of the Committee by:
- Organizing our members to be a pillar of democracy. The organizer will outreach to and assess 3,500+ existing and potential 1ACommittee members, building relationships and organizing them to be a powerful force that advances 1ACommittee goals.
- Engaging 1ACommittee members to build a sense of efficacy and agency: designing engagement opportunities that build and wield collective power. Supporting and training members to be volunteer leaders and effective advocates for the goals and actions of 1ACommittee.
- Owning recruitment strategies across the country to generate 1ACommittee membership, events, trainings, and actions, in partnership with broader organizational efforts.
- Build organizing power through deepening relationships with current members, tracking outcomes and next steps, intentional development of members’ skills and analysis, identifying members of industry unions who can organize within their unions for increased power; and utilizing relational organizing principles to expand
- 1ACommittee membership while building members’ ownership and leadership.
Build, organize, and engage member cohorts primarily from the rank-and-file, such as writers, comedians, musicians, etc. Identify cohort growth through 1:1s, events, trainings, etc. - Create communication infrastructure that is responsive to celebrity members’ unique needs, building their ability to speak and act as ambassadors for the 1ACommittee
- Events: Lead on events organizing our writers, comedians and other cohorts of professions across our membership.
- Partner campaigns: Coordinate with key organizational partner campaigns; attend coalition and campaign meetings; identify key roles and strategies for 1ACommittee involvement; serve as a conduit of information from partner campaigns to staff, and vice versa.
In addition to these primary responsibilities, all 1ACommittee staff:
- Build individual goals and contribute to strategies that increase our membership, with a particular focus on uplifting and developing rank and file members, BIPOC membership, young members, and queer and trans membership.
- All team members are accountable for responsibly stewarding Committee resources, tracking and processing reimbursements and expenses, completing and adhering to digital security practices, following all operating procedures, contributing to the administrative and digital health of the organization, and contributing to a culture of strategic stewardship of 1ACommittee resources.
- Represent 1ACommittee - our founder, members, and mission - with the highest standards of excellence, integrity, and commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace and world.
- All team members contribute to the culture and strategy of 1ACommittee and our work.
Requirements
Skills and experience: While an excellent candidate may not possess all of these skills and qualities, a successful candidate will have some level of experience or familiarity with the skills and approaches below. If you are passionate about our work and feel you would be a good fit for this role, we’d like to hear from you even if you don’t meet every item on this list.
- Minimum of 5 years community or membership based organizing, such as political, field, campus or union organizing experience.
- Strong relationship building skills, with the ability to design and adhere to consistent documentation of conversations, activities, and leadership development.
- Proven track record of developing the leadership of members to build power and achieve campaign goals.
- Cultural humility and experience working across differences, including with/within communities of color, queer and trans communities, and other communities that have been historically marginalized in the US and the entertainment industry.
- Demonstrated ability to develop organizing campaigns that move others to strategic action for collective impact over both the short- and long-term.
- A dedication to continuous learning and growth for yourself, your colleagues, and the membership.
- Ability to work independently and remotely, with a drive to expand relationships and build community through organizing.
- A familiarity with some aspects of the entertainment industry.
- The ability to maintain discretion, confidentiality, and respect for all members of the 1ACommittee and staff.
- Comfort navigating competing priorities, with the flexibility to adjust to/incorporate urgent, organically-developing actions without losing sight of the big picture and broader strategy and goals.
- Commitment to contributing to a culture of partnership, joyful collaboration, low ego/high impact approaches to the work. Accepts and provides feedback (positive and constructive) as a demonstrative part of continuous improvement.
- Demonstrated commitment to elevating the ideas, concerns, voice, and leadership of those historically marginalized or underrepresented in the entertainment industry, particularly people of color, queer and trans people, early-career artists, and working class people.
- Ability to use and navigate google suite, and a familiarity with basic digital security practices or a willingness to learn and adhere to the digital security practices of 1ACommittee.
- Comfort and willingness to manage administrative duties (e.g. logging notes on members, maintaining lists of active members; submitting reimbursements in a timely fashion; adherence to shared organization of google drives and database, etc) alongside strategic organizing work as an essential part of contributing to the success of the organization.
Location: This position can be based in either LA or NY. Some national travel (estimated 3-6/year) may be required. 1ACommittee is a remote-first organization (there are no regular, in person gatherings or office space). However, this position is expected to be “in the field” and able to travel locally to meet with members, potential members, and other partners as it serves the organizing goals of 1ACommittee.
Salary and Benefits:
All 1ACommittee staff members are contract (1099) employees. 1ACommittee does not administer benefits or withhold taxes, and you will be responsible for managing this yourself.
- The salary for range this position is $95,000-$115,000 range depending on experience, in addition to a $10,000 healthcare stipend for a total compensation package of $105,000-125,000. In an effort to increase equity, salaries are not negotiated outside of the published range.
- This is a full-time, 40h/week position with standard working hours 9-5 in your time zone. Organizing and campaign activities and 1ACommittee events may require work outside of standard hours, but staff are encouraged to make up this time in consultation with the Executive Director.
- Team members of the 1ACommittee receive generous paid vacation, including a week-long winter break (Dec 24-Jan 2) and 15 flexible vacation days per year.
- In addition to these vacation days, we observe all Federal holidays (12/year) and every staff member is entitled to 5 paid sick days per year.
