SENIOR DIRECTOR, MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS

Caldwell, a leading executive search firm, has been retained by a major Canadian professional services organization to recruit a Senior Director, Marketing and Communications.

The Opportunity
The Senior Director, Marketing and Communications will provide leadership in the planning, development, and delivery of integrated marketing and communications strategies that support the organization’s strategic objectives and continue to strengthen its brand and reputation.
This is a senior leadership role within a complex, national professional services environment. The successful candidate will oversee the day-to-day functions of the communications team, including internal and external communications, public and media relations, thought leadership, digital marketing, events, and brand management.
The Senior Director will work closely with internal stakeholders across the organization to understand business needs, ensure consistent messaging, and advise senior leaders on communications opportunities, strategy execution, and reputational considerations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and execution of strategic marketing and communications plans that support the organization’s broader strategic priorities.
- Oversee external communications, including website content, social media, video, e-communications, reports, article placements, advertising, podcasts, blogs, and other materials that raise the organization’s profile and enhance its reputation.
- Lead internal communications, including enterprise-wide messaging, executive communications, intranet content, newsletters, and other communications that increase awareness of key initiatives and priorities.
- Oversee media relations strategy and execution, including proactive media opportunities, relationships with journalists and editors, media preparation, and external PR agency relationships.
- Advise senior leaders on communications strategy, reputational issues, and sensitive matters, including crisis communications in coordination with leadership and external advisors.
- Manage, mentor, and develop members of the communications team, providing leadership, coaching, direction, and professional development.
- Review and improve communications systems, processes, policies, reporting tools, and KPIs to ensure the team is delivering value and supporting organizational goals.
The Candidate
The ideal candidate will bring at least ten years of relevant experience, along with an undergraduate degree, preferably in public relations, journalism, media relations, marketing, business, or a communications-related field.
Prior experience in a professional services firm, public relations agency, law firm, or similarly complex stakeholder environment is required.
The successful candidate will have strong strategic and creative judgment, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the seniority, presence, and credibility to advise and influence a wide range of stakeholders. They will be comfortable navigating complexity, managing competing priorities, and leading a team in a fast-paced, professional environment.
The successful candidate will also demonstrate:
- Strong experience in internal and external communications, media relations, reputation management, and stakeholder advisory work.
- The ability to think strategically while also ensuring strong execution and follow-through.
- Excellent judgment, tact, and the ability to persuade and influence others.
- A high level of detail orientation and accountability.
- Experience leading, motivating, and developing direct reports.
- The ability to build trust and credibility with senior leaders and stakeholders.
