The Role

We're looking for an organized, community-minded Program Coordinator to manage the day-to-day implementation of our new Container Garden Food Security Initiative, which is funded by a grant from the City & County of Honolulu — from kit assembly and distribution to workshops and participant support. 

This is a hands-on, field-based, relationship-driven role. You'll be the main point of contact for four or more partner organizations and the households they serve, and the person making sure 250 households receive their garden kits, education, and follow-up support — and that no one falls through the cracks.

You'll work closely with Grow Good Hawaii's Program Director and Executive Director on program strategy, evaluation, grant compliance, and technical support, while taking the lead on implementation: keeping timelines on track, kits built and delivered, events running smoothly, partners informed, and participants supported.

What You'll Do

Outreach & Registration

• Work with community partners to promote the program and register eligible households.
• Coordinate participant intake and eligibility documentation with partner organizations in accordance with grant requirements.
• Help ensure registration and program materials are accessible — using plain language, multiple formats, and multiple languages as appropriate. Arrange for translation of documents as needed.

Kit Assembly & Distribution

• Manage procurement and inventory for containers, soil, plants, irrigation supplies, and other program materials.
• Oversee and assist with kit assembly and coordinate regional pickup events, staggered across approximately seven months.
• Coordinate transportation, setup, staffing, and other logistics for distribution events.
• Collect baseline survey data from every participating household at pickup to support internal program evaluation.

Workshops & Participant Support

• Coordinate and help deliver six community workshops on topics such as seed saving, composting, and container gardening basics.
• Check in regularly with participants by phone, text, or in person to troubleshoot common issues — watering, pests, sun exposure — and consult with or connect participants with technical staff when more specialized support is needed.
• Track workshop attendance and participant engagement and coordinate collection of midpoint and final survey data.

Administration, Partnerships & Reporting

• Maintain accurate, organized participant, distribution, attendance, inventory, and survey records for program management and grant compliance.
• Document participant feedback and success stories to support grant reporting and program improvement.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for participant questions.
• Coordinate logistics and ongoing communication with all four partner organizations.
• Maintain program timelines, track outstanding tasks, and flag potential problems early so the team can address them before they affect implementation.

Why This Role

You'll help launch a new program that makes it possible for 250 Oahu households to grow food at home, even when they don't have access to land — including renters and people living in apartments or other small spaces. You'll work alongside established community organizations in Kalihi, Plolo, Waimnalo, Waianae, and elsewheere, and have the opportunity to help shape how the program develops during its first year.

You'll also be part of a small, mission-driven team where your work is tangible: the relationships you build, systems you create, and problems you solve will directly affect how well the program serves participating households.

Job Details

Location: Oahu-wide, with regular travel to Kalihi, Waianae, and Waimnalo

Employment Type: 0.75 FTE (~30 hours/week)

Compensation: $45,000/year, commensurate with experience

Benefits: Employer-paid health insurance (medical and dental)

Start Date: October 1, 2026

Duration: 12-month grant-funded position, with potential for renewal

Requirements

What We're Looking For

• A genuine commitment to food security and community-based work.
• Experience coordinating programs, events, community outreach, or similarly complex projects.
• Excellent organizational and project-management skills — you can manage multiple moving parts, maintain timelines and records, follow up consistently, and make sure important details don't fall through the cracks.
• Strong follow-through and the ability to work independently: you're comfortable taking an objective, figuring out the logistics, and keeping others informed along the way.
• Comfortable building trust and communicating effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds and life circumstances.
• Comfortable using spreadsheets, databases, and other digital tools to maintain accurate program records and track activities.
• Reliable transportation and willingness to travel regularly across Oahu, particularly to urban Honolulu (Kalihi, Plolo, M‘ili‘ili, etc.), Waianae, and Waimnalo.
• Comfortable with the physical demands of a hands-on position, including regularly lifting and moving bags of soil, containers, plants, and other garden materials; loading and unloading supplies; and setting up and breaking down community events.

Especially helpful, but not required:

• Familiarity with small-space or container gardening, food systems, agriculture, or food-access programs — we'll provide training on the gardening side.
• Experience working with community-serving or income-qualified programs.
• Existing relationships within one or more of the communities served.
• A second language is an asset — Tagalog, Ilocano, Chuukese, or other languages spoken within the communities we serve are especially valuable.
