About Control Bionics
Control Bionics builds technology that reads the electrical activity of muscle and turns it into something a person can use. For fifteen years, that work has been focused primarily on assistive communication. The NeuroNode detects the signal from a muscle someone can still voluntarily contract, however small the movement, and turns it into control of a computer or speech device. It is used every day by people living with conditions including ALS, spinal cord injury and cerebral palsy, helping them communicate and interact with the world around them.
We are a company of around forty people, with our US business based in Cincinnati, Ohio. We are small enough for individuals to have a visible impact on the business, while established enough to have proven technology, experienced teams and customers using our products every day.
NeuroTech represents the next application of that technology and one of the fastest-growing areas of the business. The NeuroStrip is a wireless, lightweight surface EMG and movement sensor that captures muscle activation and streams it to our software in real time. It reads four channels simultaneously, runs for a full working day on a charge, and is small enough to be used naturally during rehabilitation, training and movement.
The NeuroStrip makes visible something physical therapists and performance professionals have traditionally had to infer: whether a muscle is activating, how strongly, how it compares with the opposite side, and how that activation changes over time. In rehabilitation, it gives clinicians and patients objective information that can complement clinical observation and patient feedback. In sport, it provides medical and performance teams with another source of information when assessing movement, fatigue, rehabilitation and readiness.
We are now commercializing NeuroTech. With early customer experience, trials and paying accounts now in place, we are building the commercial infrastructure required to support broader adoption and sustainable growth. This role is a key part of that next stage.
Why This Role Exists
Some customer conversations are more effective in person.
Walking through a physical therapy clinic, seeing how clinicians and patients move through the treatment environment, or spending time with a performance team in its own training setting can reveal things that are difficult to understand fully from a video call.
Live demonstrations can also change the nature of the conversation. Seeing muscle activity appear in real time, using the technology in the customer’s own environment and connecting that experience to a genuine clinical or performance question can help customers understand where NeuroStrip may add value.
The Business Development Manager is responsible for leading those high-value field interactions.
This is the primary field-based commercial role within the Rehab and Performance team. The focus is on making in-person customer time purposeful, well-prepared, and valuable, both for the customer and for the wider sales process.
What You Will Do
Lead on-site discovery. Run customer meetings at outpatient physical therapy clinics, multi-site rehabilitation groups, college athletic departments, professional sports organizations and private performance facilities.
Open new accounts directly. Take personal responsibility for opening a share of new accounts from cold during the first year, working from an agreed target list and from your own network of contacts, with a particular focus on college and professional sports programs.
Demonstrate NeuroStrip. Deliver confident, practical live demonstrations in the customer’s own environment, using the technology with staff or athletes where appropriate and connecting what they see to the questions they are trying to answer.
Understand the customer environment. Learn how the organization works, who is involved in the decision, what clinical or performance priorities matter most, and what would need to be true for the technology to be adopted successfully.
Support strategic opportunities. Provide in-person engagement for larger, more complex or strategically important accounts where field presence can materially improve understanding, confidence or progression.
Identify the right next step. Work with the customer and Inside Sales to determine whether the opportunity should progress to further evaluation, a structured trial, additional stakeholder engagement or another appropriate next action.
Represent Control Bionics externally. Attend selected conferences, trade events and industry meetings where in-person engagement with customers, partners and prospective accounts is valuable.
Capture customer insight. Document findings, stakeholders, priorities and recommended next steps clearly in Salesforce so that Inside Sales and other colleagues can continue the opportunity without losing context.
Bring market learning back into the business. Share recurring customer questions, objections, use cases and market feedback with Demand Generation, Clinical, Product, Research and the wider commercial team.
Requirements
Field-based commercial experience in sports performance is our strong preference: working with Division I, Division II or other college athletic programs, professional teams or private performance facilities. Experience in medical device, rehabilitation, sports medicine or another relevant technical market is also relevant, as is clinical experience combined with strong commercial capability.
An established network within the sports performance community that you are able and willing to introduce Control Bionics to. We would rather appoint someone who can open doors in college and professional sport and extend into physical therapy than the other way round. The sports doors are the harder ones to open, and a candidate who can open them will find the physical therapy segment a straightforward extension of the same skills.
A genuine willingness to prospect. For at least the first year this role carries top-of-funnel responsibility as well as field delivery, so we need someone comfortable creating their own opportunities rather than waiting for a full calendar.
Confidence working with professional customers. You should be comfortable engaging with clinicians, rehabilitation leaders, coaches, sports scientists and performance professionals and able to understand their priorities quickly.
Strong discovery skills. You know how to ask useful questions, listen carefully and understand both the stated need and the practical factors that will influence a customer’s decision.
The practical ability to deliver a strong live product demonstration, including applying the sensor, operating the software and handling normal technical issues confidently while continuing the customer conversation.
Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to adapt your approach to different audiences and environments.
Willingness to travel. Expect approximately sixty to seventy percent of your working week to involve travel, although the pattern will vary depending on customer demand and geography.
Strong documentation habits. Customer insight and next steps need to be recorded accurately and promptly so that the wider team can act on them.
Comfort working within a team-based commercial model. Success is measured by the quality and impact of your field activity and how effectively it contributes to the wider sales process, rather than by ownership of a personal territory or account portfolio.
Curiosity and adaptability. NeuroTech is still developing as a market, so we need someone who learns quickly from customers and helps the wider team refine how we position, demonstrate and apply the technology.
