Company Overview
The YMCA is for everyone. The Y is made up of people of all ages and from every walk of life working side by side to strengthen communities. Together we work to ensure that everyone, regardless of ability, age, cultural background, ethnicity, faith, gender, gender identity, ideology, income, national origin, race, or sexual orientation has the opportunity to reach their full potential with dignity. Our core values are caring, honesty, respect and responsibility – and they guide everything we do.
Our Mission: We are dedicated to enhancing the spirit, mind, and body of all persons through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
Youth Development: All kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve, under the guidance of caring adults who believe in their potential. We see every interaction with young people as an opportunity for learning and development – all grounded in the YMCA’s core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
Healthy Living: We help people and families build and maintain healthy habits for spirit, mind and body in their everyday lives. By helping kids, adults, families and seniors from all walks of life improve their health and well-being, we build a stronger community.
Social Responsibility: With our doors open to all, we bring together people from all backgrounds to support those in need. We take on the most urgent needs in our community and inspire a spirit of service in return. Our members, volunteers, staff, and supporters demonstrate the power of what we can achieve by giving back together.
Our programs, services and initiatives enable kids to realize their potential, offer ways for families to have fun together, empower people to be healthier in spirit, mind and body; prepare people for employment, welcome and embrace newcomers and help foster a community-wide service ethic. And that’s just the beginning.
Company History
Founded in 1886, the YMCA’s roots in the Fargo-Moorhead community began with service to railroad workers and quickly grew into a lasting force for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. A defining milestone came in 1903 with the purchase of 37 acres on Big Cormorant Lake in Minnesota, establishing YMCA Camp Cormorant as one of the earliest residence camps in the United States and a cornerstone of the YMCA’s mission.
From its humble beginnings of tents, a dining shelter, and no electricity, Camp Cormorant evolved across generations, adding cabins, boats, family camp, while remaining a place where young people built confidence, character, and lifelong memories. Major enhancements in the 1990s and 2000s—including ropes courses, expanded waterfronts, new cabins, and an amphitheater—reflected continued community investment, culminating in the camp’s Centennial celebration in 2003 and the opening of the Camp Cormorant Welcome Center in 2019.
As the YMCA expanded its facilities, programs, and regional reach—ultimately becoming the YMCA of the Northern Sky in 2024—Camp Cormorant remained a living symbol of the organization’s enduring commitment to youth and community. Today, grounded in a proud history and a trusted brand, the YMCA of the Northern Sky continues to adapt and grow, ensuring that Camp Cormorant and all YMCA programs serve and inspire future generations.
