The Marketing Manager for the national Intellectual Property & Technology (IPT) practice is a critical role on our practice marketing team with a mission to elevate the brand and services of one of the firm’s largest practice groups. Experience with Patent Litigation is a plus.

The position requires a self-starter, with accomplished critical thinking skills and an understanding of the value proposition of an IP practice in a sophisticated global law firm. This professional will collaborate closely with the IP marketing team and sub-practice leadership to enhance awareness of the group’s capabilities and success, inside and outside the firm. This individual should understand client needs and execute against strategic marketing plans that are reflective of issues that are driving the need for legal services. 

This position can sit in, Palo Alto, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, Dallas, Houston, Austin or Washington DC. 


The Marketing department is a highly collaborative team of professionals who work closely with practice groups and sectors to build the reputation of DLA Piper and our lawyers. The team works with firm leaders to create and execute strategy that addresses DLA Piper’s business goals. We also measure business efforts to identify the most strategic focus for our lawyers’ efforts. The Marketing Manager will partner with other teams in the Marketing Department, including communications, events, business development, administrative and executive team members, to achieve business objectives.  

Candidates must possess the ability to plan strategically, execute tactically and have a client service focus. They must have the ability to analyze data and use multiple of sources information to develop solutions and recommendations. They must possess strong writing and communications skills and develop go to market strategies that capitalize on the group’s differentiators and align with the group’s growth objectives. 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute go-to-market plans that deliver results that support brand strategy and focus on practice priority areas in collaboration with practice group leaders 
  • Manage client-centric and data-driven, integrated marketing and business development campaigns that deliver results against strategic priorities
  • Lead the implementation of leading-edge marketing tactics across several functional areas of the marketing, BD and communications team that include brand, digital and social marketing, public relations, collateral and sales enablement tools, and events
  • Understand key business issues our clients are facing, market dynamics, and competitive strategies to improve the development of messaging and go-to-market strategies 
  • Write marketing collateral and business development content, leveraging a strong knowledge of practice capabilities and the practice’s value proposition
  • Drive an effective strategy for achieving awards and directories’ recognition that reflects the practice group’s capabilities and successes on behalf of clients
  • Lead the onboarding and integration of key laterals and their client base
  • Assist with planning practice meetings and retreats
  • Manage the practice marketing budget to align with practice group priorities
  • Measure and track results of marketing programs and report on ROI
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Requirements:

  • BA/BS degree in marketing communications, business, or related field   
  • 6 years' of marketing/business development experience in a professional services environment 
  • Strong writing and presentation skills
  • Ability to multi-task and thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication and data analysis skills
  • Proficiency with MS Word/Excel/Power Point



Preferred Requirements:

  • 6 years' of marketing/business development experience within intellectual property or technology
  • Previous law firm experience
