The Business Development and Strategic Account Manager will drive growth of strategic research partnerships through business development outreach and deal term negotiations. This person will promote sponsored research and licensing agreements to biopharmaceutical industry on behalf of our Harvard Medical School Faculty Member BIDMC and Joslin Investigators. The successful candidate will bring passion to BIDMC, Lahey and Joslin’s ongoing leadership in national and international partnerships.


Note: This is an outward-facing position and most of the effort will involve connecting with outside biopharmaceutical companies and venture capitalists by phone, email, zooms, partnering events to introduce BIDMCs programs broadly, and then set up pitch meetings in which our investigators will present to biopharmaceutical companies and venture capitalists. Travel as needed, approximately one time per month, but the vast majority of partner meetings will be held remotely or in the Boston Area.

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities of the Job: Essential responsibilities are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.

1.    With support of the Executive Director of the Technology Ventures Office and the Business Development and Alliance Specialist, this person will drive business development outreach to Venture Capitalists and Biopharmaceutical companies.  

  • Develops business proposals – including business requirements, operating budgets, and financial terms/conditions – and supports business development efforts with prospective customers, shepherding agreements through contracting process (contracting itself is done by the Technology Licensing Officers) and ensuring seamless transition to implementation stage.

2.    Executes plans to grow programs with new and existing clients through continuous outreach to clients, collaborating closely with the Principal Investigators and Chief Academic Officer.  
 3.    Promote opportunities for new areas of business growth and strategic partnerships for industry-sponsored research and patent out-licensing agreements.
4.    Provides assistance and support on issues related to annual budget development, program outcomes and margins.
5.    Contribute to the design and implementation of a Metrics offering that will enable tracking and analysis of key value drivers for BIDMC’s partners. Lead reviews of the Metrics with key decision-makers.
6.    Manage life cycle of contracts from proposal through execution. This includes client needs assessment, budget inquiry, assisting licensing officers with legal contracting, statement of work creations, and delivering fully executed contracts in a timely manner. 
7.    Communicates and presents information to other stakeholders regarding contracts as needed.
8.    Helps determine the appropriate allocation of BIDMC resources necessary to meet program and customer requirements.
9.    Assembles project team and transitions background of client, contract deliverable details, and overall project timeline to team. 
10.    Must maintain a good understanding of technology tools and their uses to deliver proposals that meet client requests. 
11.    Other duties as assigned.



Requirements

Required Job Qualifications:

Minimum education required :

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or related field with lab research experience and ability to read primary research articles required. Master’s degree or Ph.D. in biology, chemistry or related field desired.

Minimum experience required:

  • Minimum 4 years of experience in laboratory research or business development required, prior business development experience preferred.
  • Strong research budgeting preparation experience

Licensure and/or Certification required:

  • None

Knowledge, skills and abilities required :

  • Strong in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint
  • Excellent interpersonal, (verbal and written) communication skills, ability to summarize, comprehend and communicate in English complex information to medical center staff including Harvard Faculty PI’s
  • Outgoing with proven ability and desire to network with potential biopharmaceutical partners.
  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills 
  • Ability to interact with senior hospital and industry leaders
  • Ability to work independently, with support and mentoring from management
