The Company
Our client is a notforprofit ophthalmic trial centre in East Melbourne conducting Phase I–IV studies for biopharma and medtech partners, with specialist expertise in glaucoma, retinal diseases, and advanced therapeutics like gene and cell therapies. It combines stateoftheart facilities with a mission to expand access to emerging sightsaving treatments and support a future free from vision loss.
The Opportunity
Working closely with the CEO, the Business Development Manager will drive strategic growth, revenue generation, and sustainability in our client’s expansion of trial delivery services.
- Develop and execute strategic growth initiatives in partnership with the CEO to drive longterm organisational expansion and achieve commercial objectives.
- Lead the full business development lifecycle by identifying opportunities, developing proposals, negotiating contracts, and managing seamless project handover to operational teams.
- Build and diversify revenue streams through partnerships, sponsorships, grants, and other funding channels to strengthen financial sustainability.
- Monitor, analyse, and report on sales pipelines, forecasts, and performance metrics to provide datadriven insights and recommendations to senior leadership.
- Conduct comprehensive market and competitor analysis to identify emerging opportunities, industry trends, and regulatory shifts that inform commercial strategy.
- Clearly articulate the organisation’s value proposition to differentiate service offerings and position it competitively within the clinical research marketplace.
- Establish, grow, and maintain strategic relationships with key external stakeholders, including pharmaceutical sponsors, CROs, biotech organisations, research bodies, and industry associations.
- Represent the organisation at national and international conferences, events, and professional forums to promote capabilities and generate new business opportunities.
- Oversee and optimise business development systems and tools—such as CRM platforms and sales pipelines—to improve efficiency, visibility, and performance tracking.
- Collaborate crossfunctionally by sharing market intelligence, aligning feasibility and budgeting processes with growth goals, and supporting organisational initiatives to ensure operational readiness for new opportunities.
Requirements
The Requirements
- Hold tertiary qualifications in life sciences, health sciences, or a related discipline, with a strong understanding of the clinical trials environment including sponsors, CROs, investigators, and sites.
- Demonstrate a proven track record in business development within clinical trials, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or CRO settings, including securing new business and building strategic partnerships.
- Demonstrate proficiency with CRM systems, digital platforms, and project management tools to manage pipelines, track opportunities, and support informed decisionmaking.
- Show capability in developing and executing business development strategies, preparing business cases, managing budgets, and monitoring financial performance to support sustainable growth.
- Possess advanced knowledge of ICHGCP, Australian regulatory and ethics frameworks (TGA, HREC), and international clinical trial standards, with the ability to apply these to commercial and operational decisionmaking.
- Display highly developed interpersonal, negotiation, and influencing abilities that enable effective relationshipbuilding with internal teams, sponsors, investigators, and external partners.
- Exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills, including preparing highquality proposals, tenders, reports, and delivering compelling presentations to senior stakeholders.
- Work autonomously with sound judgement in complex environments, balancing competing priorities in a fastpaced clinical research setting.
- Show willingness and capacity to undertake domestic and international travel to support business development activities as required.
