GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs pool deck supervision, customer service and lifeguard duties to ensure efficient day-to-day
operations of the Ouray Hot Springs Pool, Fitness Center and Bathhouse. Directs swim lesson program,
guard training, aquatic programing, and general supervision of guard staff. Assists with special events,
general maintenance tasks, including bathhouse cleaning and opening duties, and related tasks as assigned.
Responsible for ensuring lifeguards meet expectations in terms of safety, vigilance and training. Acts as the
manager on duty when on site.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the Aquatic and Facilities Manager.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Responsible for ensuring that guards are fulfilling their assigned duties. As manager on duty it is the
responsibility of this position to ensure best practices are in place, staff is on time and equipped to work, the
opening duties are fulfilled and during closing shifts closing duties are fulfilled.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Aquatic Programs: Facilitate swim lesson programming, including private & group lessons, swim lessons for
Ouray students, Jr. Lifeguard program, age group & master’s swim team, water exercise classes, board yoga.
Facilitates and creates new aquatic programs.
Administrative Functions: Assists with pool operations, point person for activities during special events
(New Year’s Eve Celebration, Easter Egg Hunt, Memorial Day weekend activities, Fourth of July activities,
Labor Day weekend activities, Floating Pumpkin Patch, Soaking with Santa, Dive-in-Movies). Assists in the
development of worker skills by performing on-the-job training: documents and refers all personnel issues
to Aquatic and Facilities Manager. Manages websites including online swim lessons and facility reservations,
including the reporting of necessary financials to the Aquatic Facility manager.
Management responsibilities: Will act as manager on duty, Assists with organizing seasonal recruitment of
aquatics staff. Participates in interviews for aquatic positions. Participates in annual evaluations of direct
reports including lead and part time life guards.
Provides quality control and sets standards for Lead Lifeguards to assure that the Leads are able to give
direction, and close and open the facility properly. This position is directly responsible for the performance
of lead life guards and will work with the Aquatics coordinator closely to ensure high standards are met for
both the facility and Safety. This position will work in tandem with the aquatic coordinator to ensure we
maintain the highest safety standards and training of our life guards. This position may be asked for input
on staff scheduling by the aquatics coordinator.
Prepares and submits daily inspection reports and accident/incidents reports.
Monitors equipment and inventory needs; apprises pool management of needs.
Shift Operations: Performs opening and closing procedures; assures all systems are properly functioning;
secures doors and accesses, assures shift duties are completed.
Ensures lifeguards complete proper daily maintenance and lifeguard duties.
Training: Attends and facilitates all staff meetings, in-services and trainings; prepares monthly
in-in-services for the aquatic department; instructs lifeguard training, assists pool management with
orientations. With oversight of the Hot Springs Aquatic & Facilities Manager, plans and prepares lifeguard
training courses, WSI instruction courses, swim lessons, CPR/AED, First Aid courses and Water Exercise
courses; teaches swim lessons, coaches swim teams; participates in physical and rescue skill training.
Lifeguard Duties: Works “in rotation” when scheduled or assigned; ensures that patrons in the pool and
the facility are supervised in a manner that is effective at reducing the risk of accidents; monitors swimmers;
performs rescue and lifesaving maneuvers; administers CPR and first aid according to training protocols.
Provides the pool user with the highest level of customer service; observes patron activities; enforces all pool
rules consistently, tactfully and promptly, disciplines or ejects patrons for rule infraction; ensures
compliance of policies and procedures by lifeguards.
Performs general maintenance tasks, including bathhouse cleaning as assigned; keeps the pool area clear of
obstructions and minimizes/eliminates hazardous situations in the pool area.
Sets up and takes down any equipment or surrounding areas as needed, performs daily safety inspections
Continuously monitors weather conditions and will evacuate and/or close the pool if warranted by weather
conditions.
Safety/Emergency: Completes accident/incident reports immediately after an occurrence and submits
report to Pool & Facility Manager for review; responds to emergency situations as set out in the Pool
Manuel, takes proper safety precautions. Anticipates unsafe circumstances, and act accordingly to prevent
accidents; responsible for the safety of self. Others, materials, and equipment; uses all required safety
equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures; implements the operational and
emergency action plan as necessary.
Water Quality/ Filtration: Ensures pool compliance with filtration procedures; administers all tests
when needed. Reasonable for supporting our maintenance team with their needs and reporting.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Education and Experience:
A. Graduation from high school;
AND
B. Three (3) years’ experience in the lifeguarding and the day-to-day operations of aquatics and
recreation facilities;
OR
C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Considerable knowledge of the rules and regulations of a variety of aquatics and recreational
activities; water safety practices, rules and guidelines; various bio-hazards associated with water
and bath house operations; general principles of supervision.
Ability to develop, organize and implement various aquatic programs; communicate effectively
about rules, regulations and programs, demonstrate swimming skills; establish and maintain
effective working relationships with employees, the public, and other organizations, ability to
communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; apply various software applications to prepare
documentation and reports (i.e., Google and Microsoft systems); demonstrate good judgment and
decision making.
3. Special Qualifications:
Must pass a pre-course swimming skills test prior to attending Lifeguard certification course.
Ability to pass performance proficiency tests based on American Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR for the
Professional Rescuer and AED certification requirements. May require WSI certification during
employment. Must obtain instructor certification in at least 2 of the following areas (to be
determined by Hot Springs Facilities & Aquatic Manager): Lifeguard Instructor, CPR/First Aid
Instructor, Water Aerobics Instructor and WSI Trainer Instructor. This position requires evening,
week-end, and holiday shifts. Within one year of start date must obtain LGIT & WSIT
certification
4. Work Environment:
Employees in the position are exposed to seasonal weather extremes. Tasks require a variety of
physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting,
reaching, pulling, pushing and lifting. Talking, hearing and seeing are essential to performance of
daily tasks. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity needed in performance of essential duties. Mental
application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating
thinking and creative problem solving.
