Description
Under the direction of the Aquatics Supervisor, the Recreation Coordinator – Aquatics coordinates and supports the daily operations, staffing, and programming across the City’s aquatic facilities, including the Bob Burger Recreation Center, The Great Outdoors Waterpark, and Waneka Lake Boathouse. This position provides hands-on leadership to full time, part time, and seasonal aquatic staff; oversees program implementation; and ensures safe, efficient, and high-quality aquatic operations and experiences for the Lafayette community.

Requirements
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE: Thorough knowledge of aquatic facility operations, programming, and public safety; departmental policies and procedures governing public pools, waterparks, and waterfronts; and principles and practices of aquatic program development, including swim lessons, swim team operations, and special events. Considerable understanding of staff supervision, hiring, training, and evaluation methods; budgeting, purchasing, and administrative recordkeeping; and customer service and public relations techniques. Working knowledge of health and safety standards related to aquatic facilities, including CPR/AED, First Aid, water quality management, and chemical handling; and proficiency in recreation management software such as RecTrac, along with standard computer applications used for scheduling, communication, and reporting.
SKILLS: Skilled in providing excellent customer service and maintaining positive community relations; communicating effectively both verbally and in writing; leading, motivating, and supporting a diverse workforce across multiple aquatic facilities; and managing multiple projects and priorities while maintaining attention to detail.
ABILITIES: Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate a comprehensive aquatics program that includes daily operations, staffing, and programming across several facilities; recruit, train, schedule, and supervise full-time, part-time, and seasonal aquatic personnel; assist with budget preparation, purchasing, and financial tracking for aquatic programs and operations; and develop and implement operational and programmatic procedures to ensure safety, efficiency, and quality. Ability to evaluate program participation, facility use, staff performance and make recommendations for improvement; interpret and enforce City and departmental policies in a consistent and fair manner; and exercise sound judgment and initiative in resolving problems and making decisions. Must be able to adapt to changing priorities, facility needs, and seasonal demands; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other departments, outside agencies, and the public; and respond effectively to operational issues and emergencies.
TRAINING: Any combination of experience and education equivalent to the completion of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Recreation Management or a closely related field. Minimum of two years of supervisory experience or demonstrated skills and training in aquatic facility operations, programming, and staff management. Certified American Red Cross Lifeguard required. American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI), and Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification required within 6 months of hire. Water Safety Instructor Trainer certification (WSIT) preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum of three (3) years of progressive experience in aquatic operations, programming, or facility management, including experience supervising staff and overseeing public pool operations. Experience managing aquatic programs such as swim lessons, swim teams, and special events preferred. Prior experience in a municipal or public recreation setting desirable.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:
Operations and Facility Coordination:
- Coordinate daily operations of aquatic facilities in collaboration with other aquatics staff, ensuring facilities are safe, clean, and compliant with health and safety regulations.
- Assist in developing, implementing, and monitoring operational standards, emergency response procedures, and customer service expectations.
- Oversee lifeguarding operations, including scheduling, training, and safety protocol adherence.
- Assist, as needed, with the opening and closing of seasonal facilities.
- Provide responsive, solution-oriented customer service to both internal and external patrons; ensure timely communication, professional interactions, and a welcoming environment across all aquatic facilities.
Programming and Events:
- Responsible for the development, scheduling, and implementation of aquatic recreation programs and special events for all facilities.
- Ensure consistent, high-quality program delivery by reviewing lesson plans, observing classes, and analyzing feedback from participants and staff, including survey data, to inform continuous improvement.
- Prepares, enters, and manages all aquatic program information in recreation management software.
- Collaborate with community partners, schools, and local organizations to enhance and expand aquatic programming and community outreach opportunities.
- Manage the Lafayette Seals Swim Team, coordinating logistics, schedules, communication, and league compliance.
Staff Supervision and Development:
- Directly supervise two full-time pool managers, as well as part-time and seasonal staff across all aquatic facilities.
- Lead hiring, onboarding, training processes, and scheduling for aquatics personnel. Ensure all aquatic staff maintain required certifications; coordinate ongoing training and professional development; conduct regular performance evaluations to support growth.
- Promote a positive, inclusive, and team-oriented work environment.
Administrative Responsibilities:
- Collect and analyze participation data, staff performance metrics, and incident trends to guide program development and staffing decisions.
- Utilize RecTrac and other software systems to support program administration, reporting, and facility scheduling.
- Contribute to the development of the seasonal activity guide by preparing program descriptions and schedules; collaborate with marketing staff to promote aquatic offerings and analyze participation trends to enhance existing and develop future programming.
- Assist the Aquatics Supervisor with budget preparation, including tracking expenditures, forecasting revenue, and monitoring supply costs across multiple facilities.
- Collaborate with other recreation program areas to support citywide events, interdepartmental projects, and facility scheduling.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR with AED, required; the preferred certifications stated above that the candidate does not currently have must be attained within six months of hire.
