POSITION PURPOSE:
The Logging Operations Administrator manages California Timberlands contract logging, mechanical feller bunching, and mechanical processing with a focus on contractor safety, operational cost-effectiveness, and accomplishing the projected annual harvest. The incumbent assures a safe working environment for contractors through a consistent and proactive approach to contractor safety. Additionally, this position will utilize their operational knowledge to assess harvest units and identify the most cost-effective harvest method within the framework of the California Forest Practice Rules, Forest Habitat Conservation Plan, Aquatic Habitat Conservation Plan, all state and local Timber Harvest Plan provisions, and Green Diamond policies. Finally, this position is responsible for negotiating competitive harvest rates with contractors and assisting in contractor recruitment to ensure adequate annual contractor capacity.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (other duties may be assigned)
- Encourages a safe work environment by proactively working with contractors to use tools such as worksite safety discussions, monthly safety policy compliance spot checks, and leading by example.
- Evaluates harvest units to identify and recommend the most cost-efficient method of harvesting.
- Assures maximum resource recovery from contract fall, buck, yard, and load capacity.
- Provides informative feedback to plan-writing Registered Professional Foresters (RPFs) concerning harvest system capabilities and limitations.
- Offers time for consultation with plan-writing RPFs to assess units from a harvest engineering perspective during the THP layout phase.
- Negotiates contract yard and load harvest rates at competitive industry prices.
- Prepares contract rate sheets requiring the incumbent to seek positive confirmation of status from all Green Diamond departments who effect the process prior to the start of activity.
- Provides regular feedback for the monthly logging model update identifying changes, delays, omissions, and inclusions to be factored in the planning process of production
Requirements
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Associates or Bachelors' degree in Forest Management or the equivalent work experience.
- Experience in a broad range of forest operations, administering contracts, or supervising logging operations employees.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Working knowledge of the California Forest Practice Rules.
- Demonstrated negotiating skills.
- Proven skills at estimating logging productivity rates.
- Ability to be highly motivated and self-directed.
- Exhibits strong leadership skills. Works with integrity, trust and commitment, setting an example for others.
