Description
Wiley, a leading law firm in Washington, DC, is seeking a Business Development Manager to support our Marketing department and the firm's regulatory practices. The Business Development Manager is responsible for developing and managing the implementation of focused marketing and business development strategies for the firm’s practice groups, assisting them in their client development and retention activities.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- When appropriate, assists with recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and training new staff in the department
- Oversees the daily workflow of team members
- Provides staff with constructive and timely performance feedback and evaluations
- Handles disciplinary process, including escalating employment matters to the head of the department and the Senior Director of Human Resources when necessary
- Provides leadership and mentoring to staff, including on-going performance management, feedback and coaching, identification of training opportunities, and preparation of career development plans
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Work with the Director of Business Development on the development of a comprehensive business development strategy for assigned practice areas
- Identify business development opportunities, coordinate attorney teams to pitch new business, and drive such opportunities from concept to execution
- Collaborate with attorneys to expand business development efforts including contributing to annual business plans and assisting partners with the implementation and execution of such plans, tracking initiatives and outcomes
- Keep abreast of trends and developments in assigned practice areas in order to help identify and recommend targets and provide support for expanding existing client relationships
- Manage the practices’ responses to RFPs – drafting responses, coordinating attorney teams and tracking language and outcomes
- Manage submissions and nominations to industry directories including Chambers and Legal 500 US; draft and submit submissions and references and leverage rankings in business development materials
- Coordinate the creation, development and assembly of practice group collateral materials, including one-off pieces, to support business development efforts
- Manage systems and processes to track, measure and report on results (ROI) of business development initiatives
- Attend and participate in practice group meetings and retreats; report to each practice on their initiatives and results
- Gather intelligence on emerging market and industry trends to provide attorneys with an understanding of the competitive landscape and to position the firm for increased effectiveness in winning new business
- Conduct industry research and develop knowledge about firm clients and industries. Oversee client and market research and analysis, including researching litigation, corporate and individual profiles
- Facilitate the planning, implementation and follow-up of new business or cross-marketing opportunities
- Actively participate in increasing the firm’s visibility in target industry sectors and markets through networking, participation in industry organizations and developing high-value opportunities and business connections for attorneys
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- An on-site presence is an essential function of this position. Remote work may be permitted in accordance with the firm’s flexible work policy and based on business needs
- Position operates in a professional office environment which is usually quiet to moderate
- Position routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets
- Position requires that the employee be able to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- This position is primarily a sedentary position. However, some duties and responsibilities may require the employee to lift files, open filing cabinets, bend or stand, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, occasionally move about to access office equipment, file cabinets, etc.
- May require employee to carry or lift items weighing up to 10 pounds
OTHER DUTIES AND EXPECTATIONS:
- Meets the department’s expectations to retrieve, read and/or respond to firm and client-related e-mail messages during and outside of core business and scheduled work hours by connecting a personal mobile device (smartphone or tablet with a data plan) to the firm’s network

Requirements
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Strong leadership skills, including the ability to supervise, lead and motivate a team
- Knowledge of assigned practice areas and ability to synthesize and apply data
- The ability to communicate professionally and effectively, both in oral and written form
- Exceptional project management skills, including the ability to multi-task, prioritize/coordinate deadlines and track progress of tasks
- Ability to organize workflow and use time efficiently
- Ability to demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy
- Must maintain confidentiality of work-related information and materials
- Must establish and maintain effective working relationships in or out of a team environment
- Understands and adopts organizational structure
- Possesses an attitude of collaboration and sharing
- Willingness to learn and adopt new methodologies
- Proficiency with office productivity applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat); familiarity with CRM software and aptitude for learning new software strongly preferred
- Flexibility and willingness to respond to issues during and outside of core business hours
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree required; major in marketing or business preferred
- Minimum seven (7) years marketing and business development experience, with minimum of five (5) years’ prior law firm experience preferred
- Previous direct supervisory experience required
- Experience supporting regulatory practices within a law firm environment required
