Description

The Access Coordinator assures that students with disabilities registered with the Office of Disability Services for Students receive reasonable accommodations and auxiliary aids/services in accordance with federal disability anti-discrimination legislation. Additionally, the Access Coordinator synthesizes data, determines accommodations, and coordinates the implementation of appropriate and reasonable accommodations and auxiliary aids/services to facilitate full student participation in university programs and services.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Reviews and interprets complex medical and psychometric data from appropriate certified/licensed professionals as documentation to determine eligibility for services.
 - Provides outreach, consultation, and presentations to university faculty and staff to facilitate an environment of accessibility and opportunity for persons with disabilities. Provides leadership for the full inclusion of persons with disabilities in all aspects of campus life.
 - Reads, interprets, and critically analyzes medical and psychometric reports submitted as documentation of academic and functional impact of a disability to determine when conditions represent Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-qualified disabilities. Assesses student needs and determines academic modifications and auxiliary aids/services to reasonably and appropriately accommodate students in a manner that does not fundamentally alter the nature of the services, program, or activity.
 - Interacts with students to coordinate the implementation and delivery of support services; assists students in resolving accessibility issues; counsels students on effective self-advocacy skills; educates students regarding legal aspects of accommodations; makes appropriate referrals to other campus and community services.
 - Orientates students to services and meets with students to assist with study skills, life management skills, and address issues relative to disability. Develops and implements individual skill-building strategies. Monitors academic progress through the optional Collegiate Life Coaching program. Facilitates positive peer contact and interactions among persons with disabilities.
 - Provides consultation, collaboration, and disability advocacy with faculty and serves as a resource for information relative to disability. Creates and participates in outreach educational programming/presentations for faculty, staff, and administrators regarding legal aspects of disability, general and specific information about disability services, and office policies and procedures. Sits on campus committees related to disability matters and brings to the attention of University administrators issues of importance to students with disabilities. Participates in monthly awareness events and annual awards banquet.
 - Maintains office and student records in updated condition; records statistical information; assists in meeting department reporting requirements; assists with assessment initiatives.
 - Maintains a high level of knowledge/expertise regarding issues, resources, and concerns for persons with disabilities through ongoing professional development.
 - Responds to students, student families, instructors, faculty, staff, and administrators inquiring about disability services and policies and procedures for establishing services and receiving accommodations for prospective students.
 - Contributes to the development of office procedures, goals, and objectives to facilitate student success in alignment with the University strategic plan. Assists with the development of office workflow, documentation guidelines, and forms. Participates in the creation, review, and updating of office literature such as office website, printed material, Facebook, Twitter, newsletter, and other material/media that support the department and University mission. Shares in the supervision of student support staff as needed.
 
- Develops and implements programs and initiatives that offer support for students in crisis, facing adversity or challenges, or who belong to an under-represented or minority student population.
 - Interfaces directly with students by attending student programming events, advising student organization leaders, meeting 1-on-1 to discuss support needs, and gathering satisfaction feedback from student participants to implement into future student services initiatives and objectives. Places an emphasis on confidentiality of student concerns, university policy compliance, and a culture of care within all direct student interactions.
 - Collaborates with staff in own department, as well as academic and campus leaders, on share student support goals, often coordinating funding to sponsor programs and initiatives.
 - Projects outcomes for support services offered at the program, department/division, or campus level. Measures and evaluates effectiveness of student support initiatives against projected outcomes; regularly prepares reports on impact to students and budget and may present to stakeholders on effectiveness and to secure funding for initiatives moving forward.
 - Serves on committees and performs student support research across the field of higher education and at peer institutions to identify and recommend best practices.
 - Plans and coordinates for student support initiatives to ensure student participation, inclusion, and engagement.
 - May provide guidance to other student support staff; makes process recommendations to manager for improved delivery of service.

EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor's degree in education, public affairs, public health, counseling, social work, business, or related field
 
- Master's degree in higher education student affairs or related field

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
